Behavioral/Mental Health

The Behavioral Health programs of Whitman-Walker promote the integrated health and psychological wellness of our patients and their loved ones through a wide variety of both professional and peer based services. At Whitman-Walker Health we recognize the importance of providing affirming care and are proud of our diverse staff of culturally competent clinicians who have specialized knowledge and training in issues affecting the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) community and people living with HIV.

Together we can help you determine which services are right for you and help you along the way to healing. Our services include individual short-term and long-term psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, substance abuse treatment, psychiatric assessment, medication management, crisis intervention, individual peer counseling, and peer support groups. In crisis? Here are some resources.

Mental Health Services

Our mental health services team offers help to individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, major life adjustments, trauma, sexuality, gender identity, and general psychological wellness. These services are offered to existing medical patients. Our team includes psychotherapists and psychiatrists who provide individual and group psychotherapy, as well as psychiatric assessment and medication management. Our variety of therapy groups  create a safe space to process issues around managing mood, coping with life stressors,  exploring LGBTQ identity, and coping with the impact of  HIV. If you have any questions or if you would like to schedule a screening, please call: 202.797.3539. If you’re looking for information on our behavioral health services targeting youth, click here.

Addictions Services

Our addictions services team provides outpatient addiction treatment. The program is staffed by addiction-focused psychotherapists, psychologists, counselors, and specially-trained volunteers. Group and individual counseling are available to help manage or discontinue use, address the consequences of substance misuse, and improve quality of life. Addictions Services includes both services which support the goal of abstinence and services which support substance use management or harm reduction goals. All of our services are open to people who also have mental health concerns, and we work with clients to address both mental health and substance issues. Substance misuse treatment is open to people who are existing patients of Whitman Walker Health as well as people who are not. If you have any questions or if you would like to schedule a screening, please call: 202.797.3539

Peer Support Services

Our peer support services are part of a long-standing service to our community. Peer facilitators are trained volunteers who can help you with specific LGBTQ and HIV/AIDS-related concerns, including coming out, coming out of marriage, HIV status, relationships, gender identity and friends/family members. Trained peers provide both support groups  and individual one-to-one counseling. If you are interested in learning more, contact: 202.797.3580
