PEP

“PEP” stands for post-exposure prophylaxis. Taking PEP means you’re taking antiretroviral medicines (ART) to keep you HIV-negative after a possible exposure to HIV.

PEP is a 28-day course of medication that should be used only in emergency situations and must be started within 72 hours after a recent, possible exposure to HIV. If you think you’ve recently been exposed to HIV during sex or through sharing needles and works to prepare drugs, or if you’ve been sexually assaulted, please walk in to see us right away. We will help you.

You can access PEP at Whitman-Walker Health at three of our locations during the following specified days/times:

  • Monday-Friday from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm at Whitman-Walker at 1525 - 1525 14th Street, NW. Proceed to the second floor and inform Client Services staff that you need PEP.
  • Monday-Friday from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm at Max Robinson Center – 2301 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave, SE.
  • Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Whitman-Walker at 1525 - 1525 14th Street, NW during the Gay Men’s Health & Wellness Clinic. Please arrive before 5:30 pm and say that you need PEP upon check-in.

Please bring proof of insurance when seeking PEP at Whitman-Walker Health. If you do not have health insurance or have insurance that we do not accept, there is a $150 fee for the visits and necessary blood tests. The cost of medication is not included in the $150 fee. The Gay Men’s Health & Wellness Clinic does not accept insurance so PEP is always a $150 flat fee.

If you have questions about PEP, please call 202.797.4439.

You may also walk into any emergency room to request PEP.
