Whitman-Walker Health provides confidential HIV and STI testing at multiple locations in DC for individuals seeking reliable STD testing DC options supported by licensed medical professionals. CTRS (Community Testing, Counseling, and Referral Services) visits are free of charge for routine sexual health testing – only when you do NOT have symptoms or an STI exposure. If you would like to make a gift to support these free services, you may donate here.
This visit includes:
- Rapid HIV test (This test cannot be used to start or continue PrEP.)
- Chlamydia and gonorrhea testing (mouth, rectal, and genital)
- Syphilis test
This visit does NOT include:
- Extra lab tests
- Vaccines
- Treatment
- Full check-ups or other health services
NOTE: If you have additional sexual/reproductive health or immediate care needs (including further testing, positive test results, symptoms, suspected exposures) or any concern requiring additional evaluation, you will be referred to our SMART Clinic (Immediate Care and Sexual Health) to see a medical provider. This is a billable medical visit and can be processed through your insurance. Uninsured patients can work with our PBIN team to explore available insurance and benefit options for future care.
Rapid HIV Testing and Risk-Reduction Counseling
The counseling provides clients with education on their options for having safer sex. Whitman-Walker uses the INSTI® HIV-1/HIV-2 Rapid Antibody Test and results take one minute!

STI testing through STI Self-Test Kits
This process includes a urine sample, oral swab, and rectal swab for gonorrhea and chlamydia, and a blood draw for syphilis. Whitman-Walker’s self-test kits are an easy and quick way to put your sexual health back in your hands. STI Self-Test Kits are intended to serve as routine screenings for STIs and are meant for people who are not experiencing symptoms of an STI(s).
If you think you may have been exposed to HIV, there is medication you can take to prevent infection. Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) must be taken as soon as possible after suspected exposure to HIV, and no later than 72 hours after exposure in order to be effective.
