Our 2018 Honorees

2018 Joel A. Toubin Memorial Award

Katherine S. Broderick

Dean, UDC David A. Clarke School of Law

Dean Broderick has been a constant champion for people living with HIV and AIDS since the epidemic began. Under her leadership, UDC Law launched one of the first law school clinics nationwide to focus on the rights of individuals facing AIDS-related discrimination and hostility in 1989. Her work with DC Appleseed included the release of a groundbreaking report in 2005 challenging DC government leaders to completely overhaul its response to the epidemic including the launch of a syringe exchange program. Her commitment to public interest service dates back to 1979 when she joined the faculty of Antioch School of Law, and in her nineteen years as Dean of UDC Law, she has elevated the role of both law students and law schools in the fight for social justice.

2018 Robert Fenner Urquhart Memorial Award

Alan Grimaldi

Partner, Mayer Brown

Alan has been giving his time, talent, and support to Whitman-Walker for nearly 20 years. Alan’s service began with HIV discrimination cases on behalf of folks either fired or refused medical service due to their HIV status. One of his clients was so grateful that he left his only possession, his car, to Alan when he passed from AIDS. Since then, Alan’s pro bono commitment has included successful representation of multiple asylum seekers, including a young gay man who fled Honduras after his best friend was murdered by gang members. His commitment to social justice is a steady force always encouraging new attorneys to embrace pro bono service.

Special Remarks By

Karl A. Racine, Attorney General of the District of Columbia

Attorney General Racine’s impressive professional path began with the DC Public Defender’s office, included service as associate White House counsel in President Bill Clinton’s administration, led to the role of managing partner, pro bono champion, and avid Whitman-Walker supporter at Venable LLP, and most recently, landed him in the role of the first independent Attorney General for the District.
