Recently, members of our Whitman-Walker Health dental team at Max Robinson Center, led by Dr. Claudiu Buck, was very happy to participate in a great #heathcare educational event geared toward young men from across the District for 𝐕𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐂.

Though healthcare is the fastest growing industry in the country, men remain underrepresented in the field. Hence, the reason and the opportunity for this training session organized by the DC Advanced Technical Center and DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE).

The Ward 8 Advanced Technical Center (DC-ATC) is currently temporarily located in a portion of the 3rd floor of Max Robinson Center, as they are building out their permanent location on the 2nd floor. It offers career learning pathways in clinical medical assisting and emergency medical technicians to accepted high school students.

During the training, Dr. Buck, his dental hygienist Jo, and dental assistants Monet, Ive, Ricky and Breia discussed what a career in the dental field could entail, what it takes to be a dental assistant, and how important the work that they do really is. They then instructed the students on how to make dental impressions of their teeth. The full afternoon also included instruction from staff from Children’s National Hospital and DC Fire and EMS as scholars were introduced to pathways including:

🩺 Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
🩺 Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA)
🩺 General Nursing (Clinical Nursing Assistant)
🩺 Dental Assistant

Students rotated through hands-on stations including Stop the Bleed, EpiPen administration, vitals, handwashing best practices, CPR, donning & doffing PPE, dental impressions, and the Anatomage Table.

Our dental staff really enjoyed instructing the students. And none of this happened without the phenomenal ATC staff and instructional partners who continue to deliver some of the best healthcare training experiences in the city.
