Background
Dr. Namrata Shah is an Infectious Disease Physician, HIV expert, clinical researcher, and public health advocate with over ten years of experience. Dr. Shah completed her Internal Medicine Residency training at Howard University Hospital and her Infectious Disease Fellowship at Georgetown University Hospital where she realized firsthand how social determinants of health and structural barriers as well as stigma impact engagement in care, particularly for people living with HIV. This prompted her to pursue a career in public health and community medicine. She has also served as a volunteer physician for organizations like the Gift of Peace locally, as well as been part of international health missions in Haiti.
With this passion for communicable disease prevention, health promotion and her experience with diverse patient populations locally and internationally, Dr. Shah joined Whitman Walker Health in 2016.
In 2020, Dr. Shah joined the clinical research team at the Institute for Health Research & Policy at Whitman-Walker as Principal Investigator, with the strong belief that community health centers serve as critical access points not only for the provision of comprehensive care, but also where clinical research can bridge science with real world impact and bring about tangible changes in health outcomes. Since then, she has led a multidisciplinary team through pivotal HIV treatment and prevention trials, Vaccine trials as well as Implementation Trials that span across the breadth of the HIV treatment and prevention pipeline. She also serves as a sub investigator for the ACTG. Her research interests include emerging investigational therapies, novel approaches to care delivery, treatment optimization and Comorbidities including obesity.
Her strengths include a strong track record in study execution, navigating complex regulatory challenges including navigating pandemic related pauses and challenges, optimization of recruitment and retention strategies in diverse populations and integrated patient centered approaches to improve patient adherence and clinical trial success.
Dr. Shah has also previously served as the Director of Immigrant Health and Infectious Disease and Site Medical Director at CCI Health Services.
With this strong background in leadership, clinical research and implementation science, Dr. Shah serves as the Medical Director of Research and is committed to broadening the scope and diversity of our clinical studies and advancing the development of novel therapies while also improving patient access to cutting-edge treatments.
