Youth Services

In February 2015, Metro TeenAIDS (MTA) became a part of Whitman-Walker Health. Together, we’ll eventually be able to offer a wider variety of health-related services to youth ages 13 to 24 and their families than ever before.

Below is information on the youth-focused programs and services we currently offer. These continue to operate out of the Eastern Market location.

The REALTalk DC team links young people ages 13 to 24 years old to sexual health information, training opportunities, free condoms, and HIV/STI/pregnancy testing. Information on all RealTalk DC events and programs can be found on our social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram).

  • RealTalk DC operates out of the FreeStyle Peer Education Center located at the Eastern Market location. Hours are Monday through Friday from 3:30 pm – 7 pm during the school year and 1 pm – 7 pm during the summer.
  • The FreeStyle Peer Education Center offers youth a safe space to be themselves. They have access to staff, peer representatives, and peer ambassadors who can help address personal concerns, sex-related questions, or free and confidential testing. The Freestyle Center also hosts weekly events to foster healthy youth-focused interactions and discussions.
  • RealTalk DC provides youth with opportunities to develop leadership, workforce readiness, and facilitation skills. Youth can complete community service hours through volunteer opportunities within the program or by enrolling in a Boot Camp training program that covers a wide range of topics from STIs to resume writing.

HIV, STI, and Pregnancy Testing

Our Eastern Market location offers free HIV, STI and pregnancy testing Monday through Friday from 11 am to 7 pm. No appointments are needed as testing is walk-in only, but clients must arrive no later than 6:45 pm.

Please note, testing on the 2nd Friday of the month will close at 6:00 pm, but clients must arrive no later than 5:45 pm.

  • HIV Testing—We offer two types of testing. They are the INSTI (finger stick) with instant results in 60 seconds and the OraQuick (oral swab) with results in 20 minutes. For those who test positive, immediate assistance is available with confirmatory testing, care advocacy, and linkage to medical care and support services.
  • STI Testing—We conduct urine-based STI testing, with results taking 1 to 2 business days. We offer treatment referrals for those who test positive.
  • Pregnancy Testing—We offer urine-based pregnancy testing with results in 3 minutes. Additional assistance with resources and referrals for carrying to term (whether parenting or adopting) and terminating are available.
  • Self-Test Kits—We offer self-testing for gonorrhea and chlamydia through a Self-Test Kit using oral and rectal swabs. Treatment referrals are available for those who test positive.
