Senior Director of Policy



Daniel Bruner is the Senior Director of Policy at Whitman-Walker. His expertise is in discrimination in employment and health care; insurance and employee benefits; and privacy issues. He previously served as the organization’s Director of Legal Services. Prior to joining Whitman-Walker in 1995, Bruner was a partner at the Washington, DC law firm of Spiegel & McDiarmid, during which time he volunteered as an attorney for Whitman-Walker and worked on pro bono projects with the Pennsylvania AIDS Law Project and Lambda Legal. Between 2000 and 2005, he was an adjunct faculty member at American University’s Washington College of Law, where he taught seminars on AIDS and the Law and courses on Public Health Law. Bruner is rated “AV-Preeminent” for legal ability and ethical standards by Martindale-Hubbell – the highest rating possible. In 2007, he received the Washington Council of Lawyers’ annual President’s Award. In 2013, he received a Community Service Award from the LGBT Bar Association of the District of Columbia.

Bruner received his law degree (magna cum laude) and master’s degree in public policy from the University of Michigan. He received his bachelor’s degree (summa cum laude) from Rice University. Bruner is the author of the Forward in David W. Webber et al., AIDS AND THE LAW (4th ed. 2007), and has given numerous presentations on discrimination and privacy law and on the law and LGBT health. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar, and lives in Washington, DC with his partner of 33 years, now his husband.
