My name is Amy Nelson and I serve as the Director of Legal Services at Whitman-Walker Health. Since starting in 2008, I have been moved by DC’s extreme public health challenges, humbled by clients and staff, and thrilled to support holistic solutions at the nation’s oldest medical-legal partnership. I organized the name and gender change legal clinic in 2012 which continues to serve hundreds of clients in updating their gender markers on identity documents annually. This is possible because of amazing volunteers and staff. In 2014, I was recognized as a “Shero of the Movement” by the DC Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs and honored with Capital Trans Pride’s Engendered Spirit award. I co-teach Public Interest Lawyering: Access to Health Care at Georgetown University Law Center. I served on the board of Miriam’s House, serving homeless women with HIV, and oversaw its successful transition into N Street Village. A Texas native, I am proud to call DC home for more than 20 years. I received degrees from Texas A&M University and the George Washington University Law School.
