Connor Cory is a Skadden Legal Fellow focused on providing direct representation for young LGBTQ immigrants. He represents clients in a range of immigration matters and also assists clients who have been discriminated against based on their gender identity or sexual orientation. Connor was previously a board member of Trans Legal Advocates of Washinging (TransLAW), and continues to provide pro se assistance to transgender clients seeking to change their name and gender marker. Prior to law school, Connor worked on HIV and LGBTQ advocacy as a Peace Corps volunteer at the National Ecuadorian Red Cross. He received his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center, where he was a Public Interest Law Scholar and received the Jeffrey Crandall Award for Legal Services and the Lorri L. Jean Student Award for Excellence in LGBTQ Leadership and Advocacy. Connor is a member of the Maryland Bar.

Erica Deray represents clients on a variety of legal issues and oversees the Social Security disability initial applications clinic. Prior to joining Whitman-Walker in 2014, she was a legal fellow at Pisgah Legal Services in Asheville, NC, where she focused on public benefits issues and housing law.

Deray received her law degree from Vanderbilt Law School in 2011 and her bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore College in 2006. During law school, she was a member of the Journal of Transnational Law and worked with Social Security clients as part of Vanderbilt’s Civil Practice Clinic. Allison Dowling is a Staff Attorney at Whitman-Walker’s Max Robinson Center in Southeast Washington, DC, focused on public benefits law, including applications, advocacy, and appeals for Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, Food Stamps, Interim Disability Assistance, and Temporary Aid for Needy Families. Prior to joining Whitman-Walker, she served as a legal fellow at the Pennsylvania Health Law Project, where she provided legal services to low-income Pennsylvanians with issues surrounding Medicaid and Medicare.

Dowling received her law degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where she completed the Health Law Certificate Program and was a recipient of the Community Service Award. While there, she worked in the University of Pittsburgh’s Health Law Clinic helping clients successfully appeal Social Security decisions. Dowling is a member of the Pennsylvania and DC Bars.

Elizabeth Ehret is an Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow. Elizabeth’s work is focused on removing barriers to employment for transgender clients throughout the D.C. metropolitan area. Additionally, Ehret oversees Whitman-Walker’s Name and Gender Change Clinic. Prior to joining Whitman-Walker, Elizabeth clerked for the Honorable Amy O’Connor of the New Jersey Superior Court- Appellate Division, and previously interned for the National LGBTQ Task Force, Lambda Legal’s Transgender Rights Project, the National Center for Lesbian Rights, the New Jersey Office of the Public Defender-Juvenile Division, and the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey.

Elizabeth graduated cum laude from Rutgers School of Law-Newark, where she received the Eli Jamel Memorial Prize for Public Interest Law and the National Association of Women Lawyers Award for her commitment to LGBTQ rights advocacy. While at Rutgers, she was named a Marsha Wenk Public Interest Law Fellow, a Point Foundation Took Trust Scholar, a Patton Boggs Public Policy Fellow, and an Eagleton Institute for Politics Governor’s Executive Fellow. Her note, Legal Loophole: How LGBTQ Nondiscrimination Laws Overlook the Partners of Transgender People, was published in the Rutgers Law Review. Prior to law school, Elizabeth worked as a grant writer for Teen Voices and The Theater Offensive, local nonprofits in Boston. Elizabeth received her bachelor’s degree in Music Performance and Women’s and Gender Studies from The College of New Jersey and is a member of the New Jersey Bar.

Judy Gerez

Judy Gerez joined Whitman-Walker as a Public Benefits and Insurance Navigator in the fall of 2016. Prior to joining Whitman-Walker, she worked at the Center for Vein Restoration in the Community and Outreach Department. There, Judy researched and implemented health-education methods and techniques and developed chronic disease prevention programs at work sites and in the community. She also interned with Adventist HealthCare where she mentored and performed health screenings to empower women to make healthy life choices as part of the Healthy Choices program. Sheyla Guevara joined Whitman-Walker as a Public Benefits and Insurance Navigator in summer 2015. Prior to joining Whitman-Walker, she interned at Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in the Office of Planning and Policy for the Prevention and Health Promotion Administration. There she reviewed  legislation, maintained databases of bills, edited and fact-checked bureau positions, assisted in the regulation drafting process, and attended bill hearings. Additionally, she conducted a diabetes prevention program assessment in the state of Maryland for the Cancer and Chronic Bureau and created a hospital birthing toolkit for the Maternal and Child Health Bureau. Lee Hicks is Operations Manager of the Legal Services Department, supporting the legal services staff by streamlining operations, coordinating pro bono activities, and acting as the first-line of contact for many of our clients, Whitman-Walker staff, and outside community supporters. Hicks began her work with Whitman-Walker in 2004 as the Corporate Paralegal to the General Counsel and has been with the Legal Services Department since December 2007. Before joining Whitman-Walker, Hicks was a Paralegal at Finnegan Henderson Farabow Garrett & Dunner.

Hicks received her bachelor’s degree in sociology and anthropology from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania in 2000 and her master’s degree in paralegal studies from the George Washington University in 2009. She and her family live in Mount Rainier, MD.

Denise Hunter is a Staff Attorney representing LGBT and HIV-positive individuals in immigration and related legal matters. She also collaborates to offer training and mentoring to volunteer attorneys in providing pro bono representation for immigration cases. Prior to joining Whitman-Walker, Hunter was an immigration attorney at the non-profits Avuda and Hogar Immigrant Services in the D.C. area. She has also volunteered and interned at Amnesty International of Poland, World Organization for Human Rights USA, GW International Human Rights Clinic, Capital Area Immigrants’ Rights (CAIR) Coalition, and Human Rights First. Hunter is a 2011 George Washington University Law School graduate where she received an award for Outstanding Pro Bono Service. Claudia Lopez is a Public Benefits and Insurance Navigator. Prior to joining Whitman-Walker, Lopez worked as a community organizer for a special project of the Santa Barbara Legal Aid Foundation: the Common Ground Santa Barbara County Homeless Advocacy Project. Before Common Ground, she completed a communications internship with Doctor’s Without Walls – Santa Barbara Street Medicine, a volunteer grassroots, backpack-based mobile clinic for people experiencing homelessness in Santa Barbara. In addition to interpreting in park clinics, Lopez connected unhoused patients to fixed clinics and social services. Erin Loubier is Senior Director for Health and Legal Integration and Payment Innovation, where she focuses on the critical collaborations between traditional health care services and legal services to promote patient health and wellness by addressing the social and legal determinants of health. Loubier oversees Legal Services, Public Benefits and Insurance Navigation, and relations with third-party payers, including Medicaid, Medicare, the DC Alliance, and private insurance companies.

Loubier is active on advocacy and systemic reform efforts on health insurance, health reform implementation, and issues affecting access to health care. She is a member of the DC Medical Care Advisory Committee, DC Healthcare Ombudsman Program’s Advisory Committee, DC Health Benefit Exchange Consumer Assistance Advisory Committee, and chairs the DC Bar’s Public Benefits Training series. Loubier led Whitman-Walker’s partnership with the DC Health Benefit Exchange Authority to serve as the lead trainer and provide technical assistance for the 33 organizations awarded consumer assistance grants as DC Health Link Assisters. She is the recipient of the DCPCA’s 2013 Unsung Hero Award and the DC Bar Foundation’s 2011 Jerrold Scoutt Prize.

Loubier came to Whitman-Walker in 1998 after receiving her law degree from American University’s Washington College of Law. Prior to law school, Loubier worked for three years at Equal Justice Works (formerly NAPIL) as a student organizer and programs coordinator. She received her bachelor’s degree from Drew University, and has a graduate-level certification in mediation from Syracuse University. Loubier is a member of the District of Columbia and Maryland Bars and lives in Washington, DC with her husband and their two daughters.

Amy Nelson is the Director of Patient Legal Services. In this role, she manages staff attorneys and legal fellows; supports the legal program staff, oversees fundraising and grant management efforts, and works closely with Whitman-Walker’s network of pro bono attorneys and volunteers. In 2012, Nelson managed the launch of the area’s first Name and Gender Change Clinic to assist trans and gender non-conforming individuals with updating their identity documents. In 2014, she was recognized as a “Shero of the Movement” by the DC Mayor’s Office of GLBT Affairs, and was honored with Capital TransPride’s Engendered Spirit award. Nelson served on the Board of Directors of Miriam’s House, a residence for HIV-positive, homeless women, and oversaw its successful transition into the N Street Village family of programs in 2011. Nelson joined Whitman-Walker from the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery.

Nelson received her bachelor’s degree in economics from Texas A&M University and graduated from The George Washington University School of Law with honors in 2001, having served as president of Lambda Law and on the International Law Review. She is a member of the District of Columbia, Maryland, and New York Bars.

Katie Nicol is Whitman-Walker’s Senior Manager of Public Benefits and Insurance Navigation. Prior to joining Whitman-Walker, Nicol worked as an intern in the development department of NARAL Pro-Choice America and as a Care Coordinator at the NW Louisiana AIDS Resource Center in Shreveport, Louisiana, where she administered all intakes for new clients and coordinated all functions of the food pantry. She has also volunteered at the YWCA in Shreveport as a sexual assault advocate and on the sexual assault hot-line.

Murray Scheel is a senior staff attorney focusing on legal services and policy initiatives to address the needs of elderly individuals who are LGBT or living with HIV/AIDS. He came to Whitman-Walker Legal Services in 2013 from the firm of Karp, Frosh, Wigodsky & Norwind, where he served as a senior associate in civil litigation. Before private practice, he clerked for the Honorable Noël A. Kramer on the DC Superior Court and the Honorable Vanessa Ruiz on the DC Court of Appeals. Prior to becoming an attorney, he was a Case Manager and then the Public Benefits Coordinator with Community Connections, where he worked with chronically mentally ill adults, many of whom were living with HIV.

Scheel graduated with honors from George Washington University Law School in 2003. He received his bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore College and master’s degree in social work from the University of Maryland. He is a member of the Maryland and District of Columbia Bars.

Leonor Suarez joined Whitman-Walker as the Intake Coordinator and comes to us with many years of experience in legal services including 20 years as a senior paralegal at Greater Boston Legal Services. Suarez worked as an international consultant for labor and HIV/health issues for the International Labor Organization (ILO) and other human rights groups in China, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Dominican Republic. Here in D.C., Suarez has worked with Whitman-Walker’s client base at both La Clinica del Pueblo and the D.C. Employment Justice Center.  Suarez studied law and economic policy at the graduate level in Spain and Bolivia.

Kathryn (Katie) Supko is a Public Benefits and Insurance Navigator. Prior to joining Whitman-Walker, she worked at the Minnesota Department of Health as a public health associate with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, where she developed a consent-focused healthy sexuality framework for violence prevention. During this time, Supko also volunteered as a sexual assault advocate for the Sexual Violence Center in Minneapolis, MN. As a Medicaid intern at Families USA, Supko co-authored the blog “Medicaid Expansion in Kentucky Leads to Spike in Use of Preventive Health Services.” Supko is an AmeriCorps alumna, having served with the Pittsburgh Health Corps as a patient advocate at the Birmingham Free Clinic in Pittsburgh, PA. Supko received her bachelor of science in biological sciences and psychology with a minor in Hispanic studies from Carnegie Mellon University. Supko is a certified DC Health Link Assister.

Krisztina Eva Szabo represents clients on a variety of legal issues, including access to health care and public benefits. Prior to joining Whitman-Walker in 2014 Szabo worked at Ayuda and at the National Immigrant Women’s Advocacy Project (NIWAP), where she assisted and advocated for immigrant survivors of violence.

Heather Wydra is Supervising Attorney at Whitman-Walker Health, where she oversees client intake and manages staff attorneys and legal fellows. Heather’s practice areas include discrimination in employment, by places of public accommodation, and in healthcare, as well as representing clients who have been denied access to health insurance coverage and disability benefits. Heather was a senior attorney at Whitman-Walker for several years prior to taking on the supervisory role. Prior to joining Whitman-Walker, Heather served as a Trial Attorney in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice; as a Litigation Associate at Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering; and was a Law Clerk in the Eastern District of New York and the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. Heather also has provided employment and Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) consulting services to various private employers, nonprofit organizations, and federal agencies.

Heather received her bachelor’s degree from Tufts University and graduated from Fordham University School of Law, where she was the editor-in-chief of the Fordham Law Review. She is a member of the District of Columbia and New York Bars.

Claudia Zelaya joined Whitman-Walker in 2015 and then joined the Public Benefits and Insurance Navigation Team as a Public Benefits and Insurance Navigator in the Summer of 2016. Prior to joining the team, she interned at a non-profit, Child Trends, as a research assistant where she trained in child abuse and neglect assessments in DC elementary schools. She also interned at CARECEN, where she served as a Spanish interpreter. Claudia received her bachelor’s degree at George Mason University and is currently a master’s candidate for social work at University of Maryland-Baltimore.
