Testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) is conducted on a walk-in basis on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center, 1701 14th St., NW. Services are part of a confidential and comprehensive STD diagnostic process, focused on the clinical needs of men who have sex with men. There is free testing for syphilis and HIV and free screening for chlamydia and gonorrhea. Hepatitis and herpes services can be provided for a fee. There is free treatment for syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea.
The clinic begins at 5:30 pm. Services are available on a first come, first served basis. This service is entirely run by dedicated volunteers and does not schedule appointments. The number of clients seen varies depending on volunteer staffing for that particular evening. To guarantee a space, it is important to arrive as early as possible to receive a number. Typically, all numbers are distributed by 5:30 pm, sometimes earlier. You should expect to spend between one and two hours going through the process.
The HIV test is a rapid test and the results will be provided during the same night it is performed in clinic. All other test results will be ready eight days from the day of testing by calling the telephone result line at 202-797-4443 on Monday or Wednesday, between 2:00 – 4:00 pm.
