\nThe procedure is done in the clinic and takes about 30 minutes. This is an “in and out” procedure done with a local anesthetic. You will not be put to\n sleep and do not need someone to drive you home.
How to Prepare
\nYou do not need to do anything special in order to prepare. This is a “come as your are” procedure.
\nStarting 24 hours before your exam, avoid using any douches, enemas, lubes or creams in the anal canal. It is also important to avoid anal sex the day\n before and the day of your appointment. Anything inserted, into the anal canal within a day of the procedure decreases the chances of finding abnormal\n results.
What to Expect
\nDuring the anoscopy, you will lie on your left side with your knees drawn up slightly toward your chest.
\nThe doctor will look at the outside of your anus first. Then insert their finger, using a numbing lubricate, to feel for any lumps or bumps. A thin hollow\n tube called an anoscope will then be inserted about two inches into the anus.
\nNext, a cotton swab covered with acetic acid, a solution similar to vinegar, will be inserted through the anoscope and into the anus. The anoscope will\n be removed, leaving the cotton swab behind. The acetic acid on the cotton swab will cause any abnormal tissue to turn white.
\nAfter a few minutes, the cotton swab will be removed. The anoscope will then be reinserted. A microscope mounted on a mobile stand will then be used to\n look at the inside of your anus.
\nIf anything abnormal is seen, the doctor will inject a numbing medicine and clip a small piece of tissue to send to the lab. The lab will give results\n to your doctor in about 2 weeks. You will be contacted with the results and follow up plan 2 to 3 weeks after your appointment.
\nFor more information on Anoscopy, talk to your provider or call 202.745.7000 to help answer your questions.

Most people in the program attend more groups at the beginning of their treatment and then taper to fewer as they stabilize.

Our DUI course uses a nationally recognized curriculum called “Driving With Care.” At Whitman-Walker Health the program format has been tailored to be\n convenient for people who have busy schedules. Sessions are conducted individually with one of our licensed clinicians. Most clients complete the program\n in about four sessions, spread over an 8-12 week period. Clients do a significant amount of work between sessions via written assignments and behavior\n monitoring.\n
\n
The main goal of this program is to help you prevent future episodes of driving while intoxicated. If the DUI Program is the right fit for you, our staff\n will coordinate with the jurisdiction where you received your charge to ensure that our program meets local requirements.
\nInsurance is not accepted for this program; clients must pay out of pocket. The cost of the program is $750.
\nThis program is open to both patients and non-patients. The first step in the process is to complete a phone screening. To learn more about the program\n or to schedule a screening, call Jen Loken at 202-797-4453.\n

The evening and walk-in\n Clinic also offers an optional 4th generation test for a fee. The 4th generation test finds HIV antibodies and p24 antigens, which are the viral proteins\n that make up the core of HIV. The INSTI and OraQuick tests have different window periods than the 4th generation HIV test. This is the period of time\n between someone having an exposure to HIV and becoming positive, and the amount of time the INSTI, OraQuick or 4th generation test needs to confirm\n a positive HIV test result. During the window period, an HIV test can wrongly deliver a negative HIV test result even if the person is actually positive.\n The window period for the INSTI or OraQuick tests is anywhere from 22 days to 3 months. The window period for the 4th generation HIV test is anywhere\n from 18 to 45 days. Whitman-Walker offers rapid HIV testing for free and the 4th generation HIV test for a $20 fee at the evening Clinic only. Learn\n more about HIV testing, hours and registration for Whitman-Walker's GMHW Sexual Health Clinic here.

Medication-Assisted Treatment for Heroin and Opioid Misuse is for people who would like to quit using opioids such as heroin or prescription pain medication.\n Most participants are heroin and opioid users who also have other mental health concerns, like depression or trauma. We can help with both substance\n misuse and mental health issues.\n
\n
The program involves taking the medication buprenorphine (Suboxone) over a period of time to manage withdrawal symptoms and, eventually, to slowly taper\n down and discontinue use. Along with the medication, participants also attend weekly therapy groups to get and share support around other issues. Individual\n counseling or additional psychiatry may be provided to help address other concerns as well. We'll work with you to set goals and develop a plan.
\nIf you think the program might be a good fit for your needs, the first step is to call or meet with a behavioral health staff person to complete a screening.\n Please note that you may not see the doctor or receive the medication or a prescription the first time you meet with us. You can expect to have a couple\n of visits with program staff before you see the doctor.
\nIf you join the program, in addition to seeing the doctor, you’ll have a home group which you’ll come to weekly. You can also attend other groups during\n the week for additional support. Some groups occur in the morning and some in the afternoon. Appointments for medication monitoring are scheduled when\n needed--usually more often at the beginning of the program, and not as often as you progress.
\nTo learn more or to schedule a screening appointment, call the Medication Assisted Treatment Coordinator at 202.939.7670.
\nFormat: daytime, opioid/heroin replacement, abstinence, and harm reduction, mostly groups
\nLocation: the program is offered at Max Robinson Center.\n

All of our Peer Support groups meet in the afternoon or evenings, some weekly and some twice a month. Contact us to see if a group is currently\n being held, and if there is space.

Psychiatry is available to existing medical patients of Whitman-Walker Health. We can help you with psychiatric assessment and medical interventions/medication\n management for anxiety, depression, and other mental health or psychiatric concerns. Often, clients combine psychiatric care with other behavioral\n health services.\n
\n
Because of high demand, there is limited availability for psychiatry appointments. When clinically appropriate, your primary medical provider may take\n over ongoing medication management.
\nCurrent medical patients can learn more about behavioral health services and availability by requesting a consultation through your medical provider. Just\n let your medical provider know that you would like to speak with a Behavioral Health Specialist. The Behavioral Health Specialist will help determine\n the best next steps for connecting you to behavioral health care whether at Whitman-Walker or in the community. Each consult is about 30 minutes long\n and consists of a brief screening and referral ideas for behavioral health care.

Each consult is about 30 minutes long\n and consists of a brief screening and referral ideas for behavioral health care.
\nYou might consider Group Psychotherapy or Peer Support as possible alternatives to working with a therapist individually. This therapy and education group offers you the opportunity\n to take a look at your relationship and experiences with alcohol and drugs in a non-judgmental space, and with the support and guidance of a therapist.\n
\n
Substance Use Management for Harm Reduction focuses on goal setting to reduce or change self-harming behaviors, reduce the harmful or negative consequences\n of those behaviors to self and others, and increase insights about underlying needs and drivers of behavior.
\nThe program is not abstinence-based and is instead guided by the principles of Harm Reduction, a set of practical ideas and interventions for substance\n users. Neither promoting nor minimizing substance use and resulting risk, Harm Reduction accepts as fact that people engage in harmful or risky behaviors\n and encourages non-judgment, curiosity, and information sharing to help people make changes on their terms. Read more about Harm Reduction here.\n
\nFor many people, choosing abstinence or complete sobriety is the best option for interrupting substance use or reducing harm. For other people, abstinence\n may not be their goal; perhaps they want to quit using one drug that's causing them problems, but they still want to drink. For still other people,\n abstinence may seem impossible or unrealistic because of their life circumstances or social circle, their neighborhood, or the need to fit in, get\n by, and survive.
\nSubstance Use Management for Harm Reduction offers the invitation to really look at your using, drinking or other behaviors, to be curious and honest about\n the context and impact of these behaviors, and to experiment with making changes.
\nThere are two ways to learn more about the program and begin the screening process:
\n1. Current medical patients can request an in-person screening when at the health center for a medical appointment. Just let your provider know that you\n would like to speak with a Behavioral Health Specialist who is part of your care team.
\n2. Non-patients of the health center can get information about services and schedule a screening by calling Jen Loken at 202-797-4453.
\nFormat: evening, non-abstinence-based, mostly groups

Substance Use Services are here to help you better understand and address use, abuse, misuse, addiction and dependence related to drugs and alcohol. Whether\n you’re seeking to quit using altogether (abstinence-based) or are ready to change or reduce your use and lessen the resulting harms (harm reduction)\n we have a range of individual and group programs to help you meet your goals. Programs are available to both patients and non-patients of Whitman-Walker\n Health.
\nBecause department staff is all licensed psychotherapists and psychologists, Substance Use Services integrate treatment of both mental health and substance\n use concerns. We offer specialized programming for methamphetamine users, heroin and opioid users, and those whose substance use and sexual behaviors\n have become strongly linked. Individual substance use-focused psychotherapy may be available as a stand-alone service or in addition to group treatment,\n depending on your care plan. Some services are location-specific. History of Substance Use Services
\nSubstance Use Services at Whitman-Walker has its roots in a volunteer-led telephone helpline for gay alcoholics that started in the mid-1970's. Since this\n beginning, the department and program offerings have evolved, adapting to the needs of community and integrating new language, science, and research.\n We provide services to individuals regardless of sexual orientation but have special expertise in working with LGBTQ communities.
\nWell known in community by its longstanding acronym, WWAS (Whitman-Walker Addiction Services, and before that, Whitman-Walker Alcoholism Services), the\n Substance Use Services department is as committed as ever to providing effective, culturally competent, evidence-based programming, and to treating\n substance users at every stage of use with the dignity, respect, and love we deserve.
