Our Policy Program
Whitman-Walker’s policy team recognizes that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer people, as well as people living with HIV, face unique challenges that affect their health. We are here to advocate for your rights to quality healthcare with dignity and respect.
 

At Whitman-Walker Health, we understand that your environment and situations may affect your health and wellness. People who identify as LGBTQ face high levels of discrimination and difficulties accessing needed health and social services. Whitman-Walker’s policy team works with our healthcare providers and researchers, and with local and national advocacy groups on a range of issues important to LGBTQ health, the continuing fight against HIV and healthcare reform.

Our primary policy focus includes:

  • Access by LGBTQ people to affordable, welcoming, and clinically and culturally competent healthcare
  • Transgender health and wellness
  • Fighting HIV, especially in Black and Brown communities
  • Collection of data on sexual orientation and gender identity in healthcare and government surveys
  • Law and policy reform for people engaging in sex work
  • Special challenges faced by LGBTQ elders and youth
