Public Benefits and Insurance Navigation
Whitman-Walker Health is proud to have a team of Public Benefits and Insurance Navigators that are certified experts on the Affordable Care Act (new health care law). We can talk about your health insurance options and help you find insurance plans that meet your needs. Our Navigators meet with all medical, dental, and behavioral health patients who don’t have insurance to see if they qualify for health insurance and help them enroll.
As certified DC Health Link Assisters, our Navigators are available to help any D.C. residents with their health insurance options regardless of whether or not they are current Whitman-Walker Health patients. After helping patients enroll, our Navigators/DC Health Link Assisters can help consumers understand how to keep their insurance by helping them address coverage problems and denials when they happen and re-certify as needed.
Whitman-Walker Navigators can help eligible patients enroll in health insurance programs including:
- Medicare Savings Programs (Qualified Medicare Beneficiary or QMB)
- DC Healthcare Alliance
- HIV/AIDS-specific programs (including AIDS Drug Assistance Programs and AIDS Insurance Assistance Programs)
- DC Health Link insurance options
We can also help patients with prescription drug assistance programs offered through the pharmaceutical companies.
After helping patients enroll, our Navigators/DC Health Link Assisters can help consumers understand how to keep their insurance by helping them address coverage problems and denials when they happen and re-certify as needed.
Sliding Fee Scale
For patients who don’t qualify for insurance, our navigators can screen them for our sliding fee scale (see attachment below) and possible assistance from grants (such as Ryan White funding for HIV-positive patients) to reduce their out-of-pocket costs.
Hours and Contact Information
You don’t need an appointment to see our Public Benefits and Insurance Navigation team. Ask at our front desk to be put on their schedule. Patients are seen on a first-come, first-served basis. If you do not have another appointment with Whitman-Walker the same day, report to the We Work location to meet with a Public Benefits and Insurance Navigator.

The Public Benefits and Insurance Navigation Team operates on a walk-in basis at three Whitman-Walker Health sites.
- 1525 14th Street NW hours: 8:00 am – 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday
- WeWork Manhattan Laundry, 1342 Florida Ave NW: 8:30 am – 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday
- Max Robinson Center: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday
Note: The Public Benefits and Insurance Navigation team is closed every Thursday from 12:00 – 3:00 pm at 1525 and WeWork.
