About Testing

Whitman-Walker Testing Services Include:

  • Rapid HIV testing and risk-reduction counseling. The counseling provides clients with education on their options for having safer sex. Whitman-Walker uses the INSTI® HIV-1/HIV-2 Rapid Antibody Test and results take one minute!
  • STI testing through STI Self-Test Kits. This process includes a urine sample, oral swab, and rectal swab for gonorrhea and chlamydia, and a blood draw for syphilis. Whitman-Walker’s self-test kits are an easy and quick way to put your sexual health back in your hands. STI Self-Test Kits are intended to serve as routine screenings for STIs and are meant for people who are not experiencing symptoms of an STI(s).
  • To schedule an HIV/STI testing appointment, call Whitman-Walker Health at 202.797.4439.

If you think you may have been exposed to HIV, there is medication you can take to prevent infection. Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) must be taken as soon as possible after suspected exposure to HIV, and no later than 72 hours after exposure in order to be effective.

Click here for more information about how you can access PEP as quickly as possible at Whitman-Walker or go to your nearest emergency room. You can also call Whitman-Walker’s PEP hotline at 202.797.4439 for support.

Whitman-Walker also offers PrEP, the daily pill for HIV prevention. To make an appointment or learn more, call our PrEP phone line at 202.939.7690 or email prepclinic@whitman-walker.org.

Starting back in 1973 as the Gay Men’s VD Clinic and run by a group of dedicated volunteers, this program serves as the foundation of Whitman-Walker. Nearly 50 years later, the GMHW Sexual Health Clinic is still run by volunteers with the support of Whitman-Walker staff – all of who are dedicated to providing quality, stigma-free sexual healthcare and treatment to the communities of greater Washington, DC.

Whitman-Walker financially supports the free, walk-in clinic and welcomes donations to support the program. If you would like to make a gift to support the GMHW Sexual Health Clinic, you may donate here.

Daytime STI Treatment
Getting Your Results

Rapid HIV test results are available the same night of your test in the clinic.  All other STI results will be available up to eight days after you have completed testing.  Due to the high amount of clients we test, we encourage you to check your online Patient Portal for test results. The Patient Portal is an online resource for you to view your medical records, request appointments, refill your prescriptions and more.

You are welcome to contact us at 202.797.4443 for additional assistance information if needed.  Whitman-Walker’s Sexual Health Clinic will contact you for any positive results which require treatment or additional medical care.

Whitman-Walker offers treatment for syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea if you tested positive for these STIs at Whitman-Walker Health through either our GMHW Sexual Health Clinic, our daytime appointment-only STI testing services, or as a Whitman-Walker medical patient.

Whitman-Walker may also treat you if you tested positive at the Department of Health. Please note, you must have proof of a positive STI test result from Whitman-Walker or the Department of Health to receive STI treatment at Whitman-Walker.

PrEP Education & Appointments

In addition to offering free STI & HIV testing, the GMHW Sexual Health Clinic offers to start clients on PrEP. “PrEP” stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. It is an FDA-approved prevention pill for people who don’t have HIV, but who have a greater chance of becoming HIV-positive. When taken every day, PrEP can prevent an HIV that is transmitted through sex by more than 99 percent. Our team at the GMHW Sexual Health Clinic can help you start PrEP on the same day you come in, as well as connect you with Whitman-Walker’s PrEP Clinic for future refills and speedy service. To learn more about PrEP, email prepclinic@whitman-walker.org or call 202.939.7690 to speak with one of our PrEP Navigators.
