Community Trainings

Whitman-Walker Health offers many types of trainings for organizations aimed at educating people on modern Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) healthcare needs, appropriate language, current research findings and more. Capacity Talk - Trainings for Youth We offer free capacity building services to the many youth-serving organizations in D.C. These trainings assist groups with promoting and delivering sustainable HIV prevention methods and sexual health education. Mautner Cultural Competency Training Mautner Project of Whitman-Walker works to reduce the gap in health disparities among LGBTQ people with a health expertise in lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LBT) women’s needs. This training is available as a continuing education unit for social workers, doctors and nurses.

Youth Services

In February 2015, Metro TeenAIDS (MTA) became a part of Whitman-Walker Health. Together, we’ll eventually be able to offer a wider variety of health-related services to youth ages 13 to 24 and their families than ever before. Below is information on the youth-focused programs and services we currently offer. These continue to operate out of the Eastern Market location. REALTalkDC The REALTalkDC team links young people ages 13 to 24 years old to sexual health information, training opportunities, free condoms, and and HIV/STI/pregnancy testing. Information on all RealTalkDC events and programs can be found on our social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram). RealTalkDC operates out of the FreeStyle Peer Education Center located at the Eastern Market location. Hours are Monday through Friday from 3:30 pm - 7 pm during the school year and 1 pm - 7 pm during the summer. The FreeStyle Peer Education Center offers youth a safe space to be themselves. They have access to staff, peer representatives, and peer ambassadors who can help address personal concerns, sex-related questions, or free and confidential testing. The Freestyle Center also hosts weekly events to foster healthy youth-focused interactions and discussions. RealTalkDC provides youth with opportunities to develop leadership, workforce readiness, and facilitation skills. Youth can complete community service hours through volunteer opportunities within the program or by enrolling in a Boot Camp training program that covers a wide range of topics from STIs to resume writing. HIV, STI, and Pregnancy Testing Our Eastern Market location offers free HIV, STI and pregnancy testing Monday through Friday from 11 am to 7 pm. No appointments are needed as testing is walk-in only, but clients must arrive no later than 6:40 pm. HIV Testing—We offer two types of testing. They are the INSTI (finger stick) with instant results in 60 seconds and the OraQuick (oral swab) with results in 20 minutes. For those who test positive, immediate assistance is available with confirmatory testing, care advocacy, and linkage to medical care and support services. STI Testing—We conduct urine-based STI testing. Results take 1 to 2 business days, and we offer treatment referrals for those who test positive. Pregnancy Testing—We offer urine-based pregnancy testing with results in 3 minutes. Additional assistance with resources and referrals for carrying to term (whether parenting or adopting) and terminating are available. Behavioral Health Services Free individual and group psychotherapy is available to LGBTQ young people ages 13-30 who have experienced or witnessed a crime (no police report required). This program provides low-barrier access to competent outpatient mental health services helping support clients’ overall wellbeing. Therapy can be provided at any Whitman-Walker Health office or within the community. If you have any questions or if you would like to schedule a screening, please call 202.803.6848. Capacity Talk This program offers free capacity building services to youth-serving organizations and schools in our nation’s capital. STABLE Families Provides direct supportive services to families affected by HIV, including HIV-positive pregnant women. If you need a new prescription from your medical provider, you can visit the patient portal (My WWH) or download the mobile app and request a renewal through there. Pharmacists with an HIV specialty are available for one-on-one sessions to provide medication counseling, HIV education, management of side effects, assistance with filling pillboxes and more. Currently, Whitman-Walker is only accepting new dental patients who are already medical patients. Behavioral/Mental Health

The Behavioral Health programs of Whitman-Walker promote the integrated health and psychological wellness of our patients and their loved ones through a wide variety of both professional and peer based services. At Whitman-Walker Health we recognize the importance of providing affirming care and are proud of our diverse staff of culturally competent clinicians who have specialized knowledge and training in issues affecting the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) community and people living with HIV. Together we can help you determine which services are right for you and help you along the way to healing. Our services include individual short-term and long-term psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, substance abuse treatment, psychiatric assessment, medication management, crisis intervention, individual peer counseling, and peer support groups. Mental Health Services Our mental health services team offers help to individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, major life adjustments, trauma, sexuality, gender identity, and general psychological wellness. These services are offered to existing medical patients. Our team includes psychotherapists and psychiatrists who provide individual and group psychotherapy, as well as psychiatric assessment and medication management. Our variety of therapy groups  create a safe space to process issues around managing mood, coping with life stressors,  exploring LGBTQ identity, and coping with the impact of  HIV. Addictions Services Our addictions services team provides outpatient addiction treatment. The program is staffed by addiction-focused psychotherapists, psychologists, counselors, and specially-trained volunteers. Group and individual counseling are available to help manage or discontinue use, address the consequences of substance misuse, and improve quality of life. Addictions Services includes both services which support the goal of abstinence and services which support substance use management or harm reduction goals. All of our services are open to people who also have mental health concerns, and we work with clients to address both mental health and substance issues. Peer facilitators are trained volunteers who can help you with specific LGBTQ and HIV/AIDS-related concerns, including coming out, coming out of marriage, HIV status, relationships, gender identity and friends/family members. About STI Testing After HIV test results are given; testing for gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis using a Self-Test Kit is available during select daytime hours at both sites. Note: The STI Self-Test Kit is routine screening meant for patients who are not experiencing symptoms of sexually transmitted infections. Testing Together Testing Together is an HIV testing and counseling service for guys and the guys they have sex with regularly. It's a chance for both of you to find out your current HIV status, learn how to play safely, and talk openly and honestly about sex and your relationship!
