SUMMARY:Commemorating The Crisis: Film Screening of “How to Survive a Plague”
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Commemorating The Crisis: at the Film Screening of “How to Survive a Plague” \nOn the 45th Anniversary of the First Reported HIV Cases\, we honor the lives lost to HIV/AIDS\, uplift those living with HIV\, reflect on 45 years of resilience\, advocacy\, and progress\, and recommit to the work ahead. \nFriday\, June 5\, 2026 | 5:30 – 7:45 PM \nLocation: GWU Lisner Auditorium\n730 21st St NW\, Washington\, DC 20052 \nFREE! Register here \n  \n\n  \nImmediately following the screening of How to Survive a Plague\, we will gather at Dupont Circle at approximately 8pm to participate in a “Seven Days in June” Candlelight Vigil. \nLearn more here \n  \n\n  \nBrought to you by Whitman-Walker Health\, and our partners: \n         \n  \nSYNOPSIS\nDavid France’s HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE tells an astounding story of\nactivism and innovation – about AIDS survival\, not death – which has been\noverlooked until this timely documentary. Culled from a massive trove of archival\nfootage\, the film is both epic and intimate\, tracking a small group of people\, most\nof them HIV-positive\, in their nine-year-long battle to save their own lives. They\nend up saving 6\,000\,000.\n\nIt begins in 1987\, six years into the epidemic\, in Greenwich Village\, New York –\nthe early global epicenter of the epidemic\, where half the gay men are already\nHIV-positive. On the unfortunate side of that statistic is Peter Staley\, an ambitious\nyoung bond trader with boy-next-door looks. Without medications to treat the\ninfection\, he is quickly forced on disability at age 26 and given just 18 months to\nlive.\n\nDesperate to extend his prognosis – and personally shocked by the indifference\nof government and Pharma – Peter joins ACT UP\, the history-changing AIDS\nactivist group. There he aligns with an unlikely ensemble of fiercely intelligent\nyoung men and women: a drama school drop-out\, a chain-smoking film archivist\,\na New Wave club DJ\, a teenager with a GED\, an avant-garde video artist\, and an\nestablished PR pro among them. None has any medical training. But in their\nrelentless defiance and will to live\, Peter sees his only glimmer of hope.\n\nThis is their collective story.

SUMMARY:Walk & 5K to End HIV 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 20th for our 39th Annual Walk & 5K to End HIV at Anacostia Park! \nHeld for the past 39 years\, the Walk to End HIV is Whitman-Walker’s signature fundraiser that calls on thousands to strap on their shoes and walk or run to support WW’s mission of providing dependable\, high-quality\, comprehensive and accessible health care to those living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. \nYour participation is especially critical as we have lost 40 percent of our federal funding for research\, including HIV-related projects\, and $400\,000 for a prevention program that enabled us to administer 15\,000 HIV and STI tests last year. \nThese are tough times\, but we know we can turn to community members like you for hope\, inspiration\, and support. \nRecruiting your friends and family to raise funds will help us close funding gaps and make sure our community does not lose ground in the fight to find a cure for and reduce the stigma surrounding HIV. \nThis year’s Walk is also special because the money raised is part of our $1.5 million Stand with Whitman-Walker campaign – and we have marked September 20 as the date by which we aim to hit this goal. \nWe invite you to be one of the 1\,000+ walkers and runners gathered in Anacostia Park to celebrate this amazing achievement. \nRegister today and walk or run to engage with the community. Join us to fight stigma\, save lives\, and end HIV! \nSponsors\nPremier Partner
