Volunteers Make It Happen!

Thank you so much for your interest in volunteering for AIDS Walk Washington!  We will need over 500 volunteers on Saturday, October 26, to make the event a success. We appreciate your contribution of time and energy!

Some Frequently Asked Questions About Volunteering on Saturday, October 26

I can arrive earlier / stay later than my assigned shift.  Is that ok?
YES!  We would love to have your help for as long as you’re able to provide it!

What's the best way to get there?
There is no designated event parking.  We suggest taking Metro to Federal Triangle (Blue / Orange) or Metro Center (Blue / Orange / Red). Metro begins operations at 7 AM on Saturday. There should be ample street parking in the vicinity for those arriving for the earliest volunteer shifts which begin at 6 AM.  

Where should I go when I arrive?
The volunteer tent is located on the north side of Freedom Plaza (the end closest to 13th Street). Check-in there and you’ll be directed to your assignment. 

What is my assignment?
Your assignment will be given to you when you check in at the Volunteer Services tent. We will make every effort to accommodate requests regarding special needs and assignments. We appreciate your flexibility – assignments are made based on your arrival time and the needs of the event at that time. 

When should I arrive?
Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled shift so that you can check-in and get to your assigned area.

Do I get a t-shirt out of this deal?
Volunteer shirts will be distributed when you check-in at the volunteer services tent on Freedom Plaza. Due to the overwhelming volunteer response, we can not guarantee that everyone will receive an event shirt. You are not required to wear the volunteer shirt – if your group or organizations has its own shirt, please feel free to wear it. Route volunteers who are instructed to check-in somewhere other than Freedom Plaza will receive their shirts at that location.

Can I take breaks during my shift?
Please do take care of yourself throughout the day. Simply let your volunteer captain know that you’ll be taking a break.  Make sure you stay hydrated and apply sunscreen if needed.

I'm required to complete a certain number of service hours for a school or community program. Can you provide verification of my AIDS Walk volunteer hours?
Yes!  If you have a verification form that requires a signature, please bring it with you to AIDS Walk and we will sign it at the completion of your volunteer assignment. If you require a letter confirming your service hours, please
e-mail us the week after AIDS Walk with all the details. 

I'm registered to walk / run. Can I also volunteer?
Absolutely! There is plenty for volunteers to do before and after the walk / run. Just let us know you're a participant and we'll make sure you get to the start line in plenty of time. This does not apply to volunteers on the route - registered participants should not volunteer for any of the route opportunities.
