Whitman-Walker Named "Clinic of the Year" by Capital City Area Health Education Center

Award Part of AHEC’s 2011 Clinical Awards

Washington, DC - Whitman-Walker Clinic has been named “Clinic of the Year” by the Capital City Area Health Education Center (AHEC). The Clinic received the honor based on multiple roles in training future health care providers, including Whitman-Walker providers mentoring medical students and  helping AHEC scholars develop a curriculum to make it easier for health care students to become certified HIV testers and counselors. Whitman-Walker was also recognized for its support of AHEC’s programs.

“We are very honored to receive this recognition from AHEC,” said Whitman-Walker Executive Director Don Blanchon. “Our work with them helps to better educate health care workers about community health and especially issues of HIV/AIDS and LGBT care. That helps to ensure that the communities we serve will have even greater access to high quality health care.”

AHEC’s mission is “To educate a diverse health care workforce through community-based partnerships, to improve health services to District of Columbia residents,” including:

  • Develop and support the community-based, interdisciplinary training of health professional students, particularly in the District.
  • Provide continuing education and other services that improve the quality of community-based health care.
  • Recruit underrepresented minority and disadvantaged students into the health professions through a wide variety of programs targeting elementary through high school students.
  • Facilitate and support practitioners, facilities, and community-based organizations in addressing critical local health issues in a timely and efficient manner.
