Going the Extra Mile

In the earliest days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Whitman-Walker Clinic (now Whitman-Walker Health) recognized the importance of competent, compassionate legal assistance to holistic health care, and established one of the oldest medical-legal partnerships in the Nation. For 27 years, Whitman-Walker has helped tens of thousands of persons with HIV/AIDS in the Washington, DC area obtain access to affordable and nondiscriminatory health care; understand and enforce their rights in the workplace; protect their medical privacy; obtain much-needed disability income if they were too sick to work; navigate U.S. immigration laws; and safeguard their own and their families' futures with wills, advance healthcare directives and powers of attorney.

In recent years we have expanded our services to help gay men, lesbians and transgender persons combat discrimination, secure adequate health care, protect themselves and their families in the event of future incapacity or death, and obtain asylum in the U.S. if they faced persecution in their countries of origin. We also help transgender men and women to change their identity documents and other legal records to reflect their new names and actual gender.

In the most recent 12 months, Whitman-Walker staff lawyers and volunteer lawyers and paralegals assisted more than 2,200 new clients on more than 3,600 new legal matters. Long recognized as a national and international model, the Legal Services Program has been recognized as a “Human Rights Hero” by the American Bar Association’s Section on Individual Rights and Responsibilities.

Going the Extra Mile is a cocktail reception where leaders from the Washington area legal community gather to support this important work. This year, Whitman-Walker will present the annual Joel A. Toubin Memorial Award to individuals and organizations that are leaders in advancing the rights of the LGBT community.

Please join us at the beautiful Carnegie Institution for Science to celebrate Whitman-Walker's Legal Services Program.
