Transgender Care
WW’s goal is to meet each patient’s overall health care needs through comprehensive primary care in a comfortable, safe and respectful environment. We recognize the unique barriers that transgender and gender variant individuals face in seeking health services and seek to provide affirming care to all patients. We are pleased to offer comprehensive medical and behavioral health services and other supportive services that we see as critical resources for all of our patients.
WW providers engage patients in a process that emphasizes partnership, education and self-determination. We view treatment as a cooperative effort between patient and provider and strive to establish relationships with our patients in which we are partners in this process.
To best serve our patients, WW provides the following specific types of medical and behavioral health care and support services:

Whitman-Walker understands the importance of identifying and addressing every client according to their preferred name and gender identity and will make every effort to do so with your help. In order to determine your individual preferences and to ensure that WW possesses the information it needs to provide you with the best possible care, new transgender-identified and gender variant clients will complete our registration materials to become a new patient, including telling us your legal name and your preferred name and gender. In addition, we have a Transgender Health Care Advocate to help answer any questions. Please do not provide any identifying information or disclose any confidential health information via e-mail. Information submitted via unencrypted e-mail is not secure and the confidentiality of the information cannot be guaranteed. You can also obtain additional information by calling our Transgender Health Care Advocate at 202.939.7698.
We offer a list of books / publications that may be of interest and a list of additional community resources and/or support groups.
