AIDS Walk 5K Timed Run Event Details


What is AIDS Walk Washington?

AIDS Walk Washington is a 5K fundraising walk and timed run benefiting and produced by Whitman-Walker Health.  Whitman-Walker Health is a non-profit community-based health organization which provides dependable, high-quality, comprehensive and accessible health care to those infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS.

When and Where is AIDS Walk Washington's 6th Annual 5K Run?

Our 5th Annual 5K Run will take place the morning of Saturday, October 27, 2012.  The run begins and ends at Freedom Plaza (Pennsylvania Avenue at 13th Street, NW).

What is the route for the 5K timed run?

The 5K timed run is a USATF certified course and the map can be found here.

Who is the 2012 official 5K run sponsor?

We are proud to have Potomac River Running as our official sponsor of the 5K timed run.

What is the schedule of events for Saturday, October 27?

The schedule for AIDS Walk Washington is as follows:

7:00 AM          Donation drop-off, runner services (bib pickup and bag check) and t-shirt / incentive
                         item distribution begins
8:15 AM          Pre-event rally and stage program begins
8:30 AM          Timed 5K run starts promptly
9:15 AM          5K walk steps off
10:00 AM        Closing celebration and stage program

How long is the course?

The course for the timed run is 5 kilometers (3.1 miles).

Is there a cost to participate?

There is a registration fee of $35 which helps cover the cost of timing tags and race management.

 

At what time does the timed run start?

The timed run begins promptly at 8:30 am.

Will I be able to pick up my race packet in advance?

Yes. Participants are strongly encouraged to pick up their race packets in advance of the run. Race packets will be available for advance pickup at multiple Potomac River Running locations. Details are as follows:

What is included in my race packet?

Your race packet consists of your bib number and attached ChronoTrack D-Tag which will record your time. Participants can also pick up their AIDS Walk Washington 5K t-shirts at advance packet pick-ups.

Can I pick up race packets for other participants at advance packet pick-up?

Yes. If you're a team captain or their designee, you may pick up race packets for friends, family or team members. To avoid confusion, we ask that you communicate your plans to any participants whose packets you plan to pick up.
 
If I can't make it to advance packet pick-up, will I be able to get my race packet on event day?

Yes. Race day packet pick-up will be available at Freedom Plaza. Participants who have not picked up in advance should check in at the Runner's Tent upon arrival to retrieve your bib number and attached ChronoTrack D-Tag. Your AIDS Walk Washington 5K t-shirts will be available for pick up at the T-Shirt Tent.

What time will I need to arrive at Freedom Plaza?

If you picked your packet up at one of the advance pick-ups, you should arrive 30 minutes prior to start time. If you are picking up your race packet on event day, proceed to the Runner Services tent on Pennsylvania Avenue which opens at 7:00 am.  There WILL be lines so please plan accordingly.  The run itself will begin promptly at 8:30 am.

How do I get to Freedom Plaza?

Public transportation is recommended.  The best way to get to AIDS Walk Washington is via Metro (which opens at 7:00 am). The most convenient stations are Federal Triangle (Blue / Orange lines) and Metro Center (Orange / Blue / Red lines). For point-to-point directions and updated service advisories, please visit www.wmata.com. Please allow additional travel time to reach Freedom Plaza. Trains will run less frequently due to weekend schedules and there may be unexpected delays due to construction.

Is there a bag check area provided?

Bag check will be available for personal items in the Runner's Tent. While the area is secure, you are advised not to bring valuables with you to the event. Please keep items to a minimum to ensure a speedy check-in and check-out. Bag check will be organized by bib number. We will not accept large backpacks or laptops. We are not liable for any lost or stolen bag check items.

Is this a timed race?

Yes. ChronoTrack D-Tags will be included in your race packet. Official results will be posted on the AIDS Walk Washington website within two days after the event. Please be patient.

Will there be water stations along the 5K route?

Yes. There will be a water station along the route, and at the start and finish lines.

Will there be medical personnel?

There will be emergency medical crews on site during the event.  In case of emergency, volunteers along the route can assist you, and will be able to communicate with emergency personnel.

Will I receive an event t-shirt?

Yes. All participants in AIDS Walk Washington will receive an event t-shirt. Additionally, the top three overall finishers will receive a medal.
